が早いか
no sooner than; as soon as ~
JLPT
N1
Structure
V (root form)+が早いか
Meaning
「が早いか」is used to express an action that occurs immediately after, almost simultaneously with the preceding action. The action that follows tends to be somewhat unexpected or beyond the speaker's anticipation.
Note:
1. Since it is used to describe an action that has already occurred, the clause after「が早いか」does not use structures like「〜たい」「〜だろう」or「〜つもりだ」.
2. The clause after「が早いか」usually involves intentional actions, so it is not used to describe natural phenomena or unconscious occurrences.
Examples:
✖ 外に出るが早いか、雨が降り出した。
✖ 母の声を聞くが早いか、涙が出てきた。
3. The clauses before and after do not need to have the same subject.
