Meaning
「丁寧語」(teineigo) is a way of expressing things, events in a polite, refined manner, thereby showing respect for the story and the listener.
This is also the difference of「丁寧語」from「尊敬語」(sonkeigo - honorific language) and「謙譲語」(kenjougo - humble language) - two ways of expressing respect by elevating others or humbling oneself.
