Meaning
「謙譲語」(Kenjougo) is a form of humble language used to lower oneself in speech, showing respect towards the listener or a third party. It is used to talk about one's own actions or the actions of people in one's in-group, demonstrating humility and respect.
When adding お or ご to a verb, the rule is as follows:
- Use ご for Sino-Japanese words that are read completely in onyomi (Chinese reading). For example: 説明 (せつめい, explanation), 解決 (かいけつ, solution).
- Use お for other verbs. For example: 仕事 (しごと, work), 電話 (でんわ, telephone).
