「まま」expresses the unchanged state or condition of a thing or situation.
Note: In sentences that express the idea of "leaving a state unchanged while doing another action", the subject of both clauses must be the same. For example:
✖ 彼が待っているまま、私は他の人と話していた。(Different subjects in both clauses: the first clause has "he" and the second clause has "I".)
〇 彼を待たせたまま、私は他の人と話していた。(The subject in both clauses is "I".)
