意味
「ても」is a conditional sentence expressing a contrary-to-expectation situation. In this structure, the first clause presents a fact or a hypothetical condition, and the second clause presents a result that goes against what is expected from that fact or condition.
Notes:
- This structure can be used in the form of 「ても~ても」. Example:
(Even if it rains or the wind blows, the match will still take place.)
(No matter how much I wait, they still won't come back.)
- This structure can also be used with words like いくら (no matter how much), どんなに (no matter how), etc. Example:
(No matter what happens, the match will still take place.)
(No matter how much I wait, they still won't come back.)
- Differentiate from「のに」:
+ The first clause of「ても」can be a fact or a hypothetical condition, while the first clause of「のに」can only be a fact.
+ When the first clause is a fact, but there is a sense of surprise, dissatisfaction, criticism, etc., then only「のに」can be used.
(Even though there is time, I won't go.)
