によって

「によって」
1. Indicates the cause or reason for an event. "Due to..."/"Because of..."
2. Indicates the method or means of doing something. "By means of..."/"Using..."
Note: It's difficult to use「によって」when referring to everyday tools (knives, scissors, phones) used in a personal manner. However, it can be used in the form of「によるN'」.
Example: 合否の結果は後日書面で連絡します。電話による問い合わせは受け付けません。 (The results of the pass or fail will be notified in writing later. We do not accept inquiries by phone.)
3. Indicates a condition under which something will change accordingly. After「によって」, verbs indicating change such as 違う (to differ), 異なる (to vary), 変わる (to change) are often used. Alternatively, the predicate itself can be「による」without the need for another verb indicating change. When adding the particle は, it becomes「によっては」, indicating a special case that could occur under the condition mentioned.
「により」is a more formal version of「によって」and is used more frequently in writing.
