I spent that day listening to the lonely scrapings of a pen. During that time, from time to time, I heard a Java sparrow twittering. It occurred to me thatmaybe Java sparrows twitter out of loneliness too. I walked out to the verandato see. Nevertheless, flying to and fro between two perches busily andincessantly, it did not show the slightest hint of grievance.

Me and my colleagues lived in a small 2 room cabin built on the edge of acliff on the mountain. I say 2 rooms, but besides the entrance, there was a 6by 2 tatami room. We ate potatoes, dried fish and tofu. Because we were on thetop of a cold mountain, the potatoes would freeze during the winter.
